Travel through the Districts of Mokhotlong and Thaba Tseka with LNI!!

Mokhotlong, captured by our dear friend, Justice Kalebe. Justice is an incredible humanitarian/travel photographer who captures the most stunning and real sides of Lesotho. We highly encourage you to check out all of his amazing photography and incredible work for the village of Ha Sekantsi by following him on social media, here.

The fifth district on our list in Lesotho to explore is Mokhotlong!!

History: Originally settled by the Batlokoa in the 1880s after Letsie I gave Chief Lelingoana permission to settle there after showing his loyalty during the Gun war, Mokhotlong was originally part of Qacha's Nek, but was made into a separate district prior to Independence. The name Mokhotlong means "Place of the Bald Ibis." The district remained hard to reach until a road and air strip were built in the early 1950s. In 2006, the district's population was listed as slightly less than 100,000. The district is home to Sani Top Pub, the highest pub in Africa.

Things to do: Have lunch at Sani Top Pub (the highest pub in Africa), take a tour at the Letseng Diamond Mine, or hike Thabana Ntlenyana (the highest point in southern Africa)

LNI in Mokhotlong: Lesotho Nutrition Initiative has been sending meals to our partners in Mokhotlong for 6 years. The rate of stunting in children aged 0-5 in the district is 47.4%. We currently have 2 beautiful partners in Mokhotlong that we send our meals to: Touching Tiny Lives and Baylor Pediatric Clinic. Both of our Basotho partners are doing amazing work in their respective communities addressing the issue of malnutrition. The 884,520 meals that we’ve sent to Mokhotlong since 2016 have been essential in helping them excel in their work.

*A note from one of LNI’s Basotho partners: “Children are our future, we must take care of them with the maximum effort. LNI meals help us to put food on the table for families in need and help them make their way out of poverty. LNI meals enable our children to access essential nutrients all in one packet, making them strong and healthy and thus reaching key developmental milestones. As TTL, we are proud to be combating hunger everyday because of LNI meals.” - Outreach Team at Touching Tiny Lives

Butha Buthe, captured by our dear friend, Justice Kalebe. Justice is an incredible humanitarian/travel photographer who captures the most stunning and real sides of Lesotho. The sixth district to explore is Thaba Tseka!!

History: The district of Thaba Tseka was created in 1980 and was carved out of the central mountain region. In 1975, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) initiated the Thaba-Tseka project which sought to develop the mountain region that had recently been demarcated as the district of Thaba-Tseka. The project resulted in both the creation of the camp town and an all-weather road from Maseru. In 1996, the Katse Dam was completed, which, at the time, was the largest double curvature dam in Africa. As of 2016, there were roughly 135,000 people living in the district.

Things to do: Take a tour through Katse Dam, the second largest double-curvature arch dam in Africa

LNI in Thaba Tseka: Lesotho Nutrition Initiative has been sending meals to our partners in Thaba Tseka for 3 years. The rate of stunting in children aged 0-5 in the district is 40.0%. We currently have 2 beautiful partners in Thaba Tseka that we send our meals to: Auray Mission Orphanage and Paray Hospital. Both of these organizations are doing amazing work in their respective communities addressing the issue of malnutrition. The 36,720 meals that we’ve sent to Thaba Tseka since 2019 have been essential in helping them excel in their work.

*A note from one of LNI’s Basotho partners: “I would love to express our sincere gratitude for your food donation to our program. Your support helps us continue in our mission and through your help we will definitely reach our goal of having children who are free from malnutrition in the Thaba Tseka community. In this pandemic situation, we have successfully reached more children who were undernourished and they have improved a lot. The satisfaction and positive impact brought by this gesture is immensely fulfilling. This kind of kindness will always be appreciated. Thank you again for your charitable contribution. Your act will always be remembered and appreciated by us.” -Senate Lekholoane, Nutrition Assistant at Paray MIssion Hospital

We hope you enjoyed learning about Mokhotlong and Thaba Tseka and all of our partners, within. If you are interested in making a donation to support our work of combating malnutrition in Lesotho, you can make a gift, here.
